Arguments Against Global Warming

exxon mobileScience is based on facts and evidence compiled by an overwhelming body of research and experiments. To argue against science, there fore, one would need just as powerful a fact baked by just as in depth research and experiments. However, arguments against global warming thus far have seen only unfounded opinions motivated by self indulged intentions.

In the United States, for the longest time right wing politicians tried to convince the people that global warming was nothing more than a liberal propaganda. In the face of mounting ridicule, many of them have changed their position since. However, the force undermining global warming is a dangerous one. As the International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), the most authoritative body on the subject partly established by the Untied Nations, prepared to release their report in February this year, oil companies such as Exxon Mobil began to offer academics and intellectuals hard cash to publish articles to counter the IPCC findings. Philip Cooney, a long time lobbyist for the oil industry was hired as a key official in the Bush administration and was given a free pass to edit a report on climate change before the government released it to the public. The idea was to undermine the threat of global warming. After uproar from the scientific community, and after copies of Cooney’s original hand edited reports were leaked in the press, he lost his job.

It seems that the most common recurring factor about the argument against the evidence of global warming is that these arguments are concocted and disseminated by industries that depend on the production and sale of elements that cause global warming. It is also a recurring theme that many of these industrialists have established long and intimate relationships with politicians who help their cause and receive huge financial campaign contributions in returns. In the case of American politics, environment has traditionally been a liberal cause that the Democratic Party fights for. So instead of being treated as a bipartisan issue of much importance, the right-wing media has relentlessly worked to try and disprove the existence of global warming, a movement led by radio personalities such as Rush Limbaugh, who has also long battled prescription drug addiction.

Myron EbellBut perhaps the leading public voice to undermine global warming has been that of Myron Ebell. While the media often hounds him for his ludicrous sound byte for the sake of presenting the opposing view, everyone admits he is the master of spin doctors when it comes to global warming. His D.C based think tank Competitive Enterprise Institute has received regular funding from oil industry giants to perform research and suggest policies that portray global warming as a hoax or worst yet, a good thing for everyone.

It doesn’t take long to realize that there is no serious argument against global warming, and most of the ones that do float around are designed by groups with vested interests. In fact, the general consensus amongst the world’s population, leaders and the scientific community that it is one of the greatest threats that mankind has ever faced has never been stronger.

Global is indeed an issue that is manipulated favouring business/national interests. Scientists and logical people are against it while politicians and oil companies are against it. Unless we unite, very meagre action can be done.

  2. Andrew Minish Says:

Im doing a school project on global warming and I have found out it is a complete democratic hoax to make money for the anti-industrial tree huggers and there is hardly any “real” scientific evidence to support your opinion. The fact is that these tree huggers are doing everything in their power to cover up the real truth.

Adopt The Atmosphere. I read this article in Newsweek a couple of days ago about major corporations and their plans to derail the efforts to fight global warming. I got pretty bent out of shape. My anger turned into a desire to do something.

This morning I was checking out Google’s new “Google base” and came across this article:

    http://base.google.com/base/a/2560087/D6726493050951623104

The thing I found interesting was not so much the article itself, but the website it was referring to. I wanted to share my thoughts and experiences, with regards to that site, in a way that might move others to action. (BTW: The article in Google base is actually amusing and is worth a read) I spent my lunch break going through the entire website and, let me just say, these guys seem to have something here. They have a pretty extensive FAQ page that I found very informative.

At first, I thought that it was a joke or maybe even a scam, however, I was persuaded otherwise. In their F.A.Q. page they addressed the fact that there are scam artist that prey on the naive.

They actually gave links to the authorities, the FBI and their state’s Attorney General’s office, to use if participants feel they have been defrauded! I want it to be understood that I am a skeptic and pretty tight with my financial resources. I am also EXTREMELY environmentally conscious. That being said, I really felt that this might amount to something. Other green skeptics should browse though the F.A.Q. page as well as the rest of the site and see if they come to the same conclusions.

I showed the site to several of my co-workers and they all searched through the site, as well. At last count, myself and about 30 of my co-workers have taken part in their program. What this organization, the Adopt the Atmosphere Foundation or ATAF, offers is sponsorship or what they call “Adoption” of the Earth’s atmosphere. They have divided the atmosphere up into “columns” that are each 400 Kilometers high with a 100 square Kilometer base. People can adopt or sponsor an atmosphere column and become a member of their organization for a nominal, and 100% refundable fee.

There are several graphs on their site that clearly explain what the fee is spent on. About 85% will go towards environmental charities, environmental lobbying, and environmental issue awareness campaigns . The rest is divided up in administrative office expenses. The thing I thought was so intriguing about ATAF was that they are hoping to eventually register the adoption/sponsorship of the entire atmosphere! I guess they plan to use the registry of adopters as a platform to be heard in the international community.

    That’s kind of interesting!

If the entire atmosphere is divided up and sponsored by environmentally concerned individuals and the concise, detailed records of these designated sponsored columns are kept by an organization in a database registry, the members of that organization would have some real clout.

Even if the only outcome of a massive registry of adopters is a raised level of environmental awareness, than I say, “Good on ya!” to those who’ve orchestrated such a thing.

FYI: The ATAF website is www.adoptatmosphere.com

Global warming is real and it is manmade. It’s not rocket science, cars and factories produce CO2, and Co2 warms the atmosphere.Andrew Minish is a republican jackass!Go to hell you moron!!!

  5. Green Man Says:

Andrew, what the hell do you mean hardly any real evidence, are
you even stupider than your mother made you? Look at the graphs asshole, CO2 levels match exactly with temperature spikes. The polar icecaps melt as greenhouse gas levels rise, islands shall be submerged and coastal regions flooded. I only hope that if these disasters do happen, you and the other dumbass republicans are first to die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Randy Covington Says:

Sorry, but MMGW is not a fact. The “Science” behind it is only opinion. There are numerous other reasons to conserve more and move to alternative energy sources. Hysterics only diminish credibility in the eyes of the general public. The fast are that the global temperatures have been cooling for th last ten years (more probably linked to solar activity) and ther have been numerous periods of cooling and warming during periods when we had minimal impact from human activities on the climate.

The sooner that the hysterical engage in common sense discussions on alternative sthat include all viable alternatives and are aimed at developing a common sense approach, the sooner that progress will be made towards cleaner forms of energy.
